Casa Ursulina
Chillan, Chile

The Dianna Ortiz Center for Women (Casa Ursulina) is located in one of the poor barrios of Chillan, in the south of Chile, where the highest rates of unemployment and sub-employment in the city can be found. Most of the women who come to the center are unwed mothers, wives of unemployed men, or single parents. Most of the women have not had educational opportunities, and all are economically disadvantaged, many living in extreme poverty. The center offers courses and workshops, intended to help the women learn a trade that will provide a little more income to the family, and so sewing, baking, crocheting, doll-making and cloth painting classes were developed to accomplish this goal.
