| Paraguay Leather Project |
Mr. Bernardino Ayuino and his sons and nephews hand-carve native Paraguayan flowers onto leather. This leather is then used to make bags, frames, and book covers. They work in a supportive community and teach newcomers the cultural craft of leather designing. Because they are grateful for their employment opportunities, some have decided to give back and have volunteered to teach the craft in church and in other local communities. The money they earn allows them to contribute to the care of their families. Recently, through work opportunities with HandCrafting Justice, Bernardino and his family were able to construct a permanent wall on the side of their workshop, which had previously been plastic tarps. |

Teko Joja Kuña Rembiapope and the Cooperative of the Weavers of Ñanduti were established by the Good Shepherd Sisters in Itauguá, Paraguay, to assist poor craftswomen to earn a fair price for their work, as Ñanduti artisans face only unjust wages in the open market. Teko Joja Kuña Rembiapope works with about 120 poor families, offering about 280 women access to skill development and an opportunity to join employment projects where they receive just payment for their work. There are about 52 members of the Weavers' Cooperative. Ñanduti is the most traditional art form of Paraguay and features 72 symbols which are intricately woven in rich colors throughout tablecloths, runners, and art pieces for tables or walls, such as this brightly-colored butterfly. |
