The Alay Kapwa Coop was founded in Manila in 1984 to respond to the tremendous poverty and lack of employment opportunities in slums around the Philippines. Alay Kapwa (meaning “help your neighbor”) has a goal to improve the lives of families through income-generating projects based in areas of need, such as the Leveriza slum, one of Manila’s – and the world’s – largest and poorest. Alternative Giving for the Village Vocational Center
The Village Vocational Center, under the direction of the Good Shepherd Sisters, has offered training in alternative agriculture to farmers in Nongkhai, Thailand for the past 24 years. In a region where insufficient rainfall makes it possible to harvest rice only once a year, migration to the cities in search of work is common, leaving children in the care of grandparents or neighbors. Through the implementation of activities which increase the farmers' income, the Center is also enabling families to remain together in village communities. You can partner with the Center to offer opportunities for villagers to help themselves become financially independent through these Alternative Gifts. Read more...
